Check your local shelter; your new best friend is waiting.  Set on a purebred? There are many in shelters, plus there are rescue groups for virtually every breed. The latest dog trend of the month or holiday puppy for the five year old?  He’ll be in the shelter soon if his  adult owners are not prepared for a 10+ year commitment.

If  you don’t see that special someone, continue searching Petfinder for your area.  Remember, it is nearly impossible to keep these sites completely up to date;  your best option is to visit in person.

Black Dog Syndrome:  It is hardest to adopt out black dogs, followed closely behind by brindle beauties.  Visit www.BlackPearlDogs.com for more information and meet local black labs (and other assorted colors) available through www.labrescue-richmond.org .

Atlantic Region Border Collie Rescue.  As you’ve no doubt surmised, I am quite partial to border collies. If you have the time, space, and energy to spend with one of the smartest dog breeds, please consider adoption.  This is not a dog for apartments or families with young children. Please read the “About Border Collies” section of the website, do your research, and consult with border collie owners.

Please visit James River Greyhounds, a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding responsible, caring homes for greyhounds that no longer qualify at racetracks.

Got bird?  Check out Project Perry, an accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, adoption and sanctuary of parrots living in captivity. Research carefully before adopting a bird; they are wonderful companion animals with proper care.
